Lesson Title – Chrysanthemum

Contributor – Debbie Grant

Grade Level –K - 1

Essential Reading Element - Phonics

Objective(s) – Students will recognize letters and letter sounds.

Procedure – Read the book Chrysanthemum to the class. As a follow up activity have students do one of the following activities.

1.) Have each student count the number of letters in their names. Make a graph of the number of letters in each students name and compare the data.

2.) Make name puzzles. Write each students name on a sentence strip. Cut apart the letters to make a puzzle. Put the letters in a zip lock bag. Have students put together each other’s names. You can add student pictures to match to the names.

3.) Make a name necklace. Students then draw pictures on strips of paper to illustrate facts about themselves. Add the strips to the necklace.

4.) Secret letter – Make each child a name necklace. Find objects in the room, that begin with the letters in your name. Place them in a small bag. Students then are given clues to help them guess the objects in the bag.

5.) Crowns – Write your favorite letter from your name on a crown. Students then cut out pictures or words that begin with the letter and glue them onto the crown.

Implementation - Students enjoyed making the name puzzles. They helped each other identify the letters needed to complete the name puzzle. We also compared puzzles to see which name had the most letters and which name had the least letters.
