Poetry and Reading

Poetry and the Five Elements of Reading

How does using poetry in your classroom build Comprehension skills?

Lessons for Poetry and Primary students

1. Back To School Jam (Amy Spilker)

Objective - Students will read a poem and decide what it is about and create a picture to show what the poem is about.

Summary - Each student will receive a book of Jack Prelutsky poems entitled, I Like it Here at School. Students will have a few minutes to look over the book and select a poem that they like. Then students will be grouped together by which poem they chose. Each student is given time to discuss why they chose the poem with their group. Then the groups will choral read the poems to the class.

Implementation - This was a really fun back to school activity. I think the funniest part was all the students who chose the poem because it was short. It really got them thinking about what the poetry was talking about. This activity also served as a spring board for some fluency discussions. Now the poetry books just don't seem to stay on the shelves.

2. Coral Reef Card Project (Sharon Hinsley)

Objective - Students will read Over in the Ocean in a Coral Reef by Marianne Berkes research a sea creature and create their own poem patterned after the poem structure of the book on that creature.

Summary - Prior to reading Over in the Ocean in a Coral Reef, pairs of students create a K-W-L personal chart on one coral reef sea creature from a list the teacher supplies: Angelfish, Clownfish, Dolphin, Gruntfish, Needlefish, Octopus, Parrotfish, Puffer, Seahorse, and Stingray. Marianne Berkes has detailed information on each coral reef ocean creature she has used in her book at the end. After the pair of students has listed as much information as they can on their chosen sea creature, they may look for more information on the internet using the sites furnished in our book study or use the information included in the back of the book.

Coral Reef Card - The student(s) create a Coral Reef Card of their chosen sea creature. 1. Outside of card includes a large picture of the sea creature with its name. 2. List facts on inside left side of card. 3. Write a short poem patterned after the one in the book on the inside right side of the card.

3. Using Graphic Organizers (Diane H.)

Objective - Students will use a graphic organizer to interpret, organize and understand a story they have heard.

Summary - The children heard the Open Court story Annabelle Swift, Kindergartener. We then used a Story Map to help them see and recall the Title, Characters, Setting, Problem, and Solution.

Implementation - The students could see the progression of the story and I feel were able to understand and remember the story better.

4. Sequencing - (Margaret Kolke)

Objective - Students will put a poem in sequence.

Summary After hearing a poem(or a new poem) the poem is written on sentence strips than in groups the students work to put the poem in the proper sequence.

Implementation - This is a great center activity. The students work together to try to make the poem make sense. After a few familiar poems I have also tried ones they are not familiar with which also works well and takes much longer to complete.

5. If I Were In Charge of the World by Judith Viorst (Margaret Kolke)

Objective - Students will rewrite the poem to fit how they feel and what changes they would like to make

Summary Students will read and discuss the poem If I were in Charge of the world by Judith Viorst. They are then given a copt of the poem with parts of it taken out (fill in the blank) Students fill it out to match their feelings. Students can type these out and print their copies. It makes a great classroom decoration.

6. I Have a Dream (Michelle Bender)

Objective -Students will read poems about dreams and create a mobile describing their dreams for the future.

Summary - Students will read 2-3 poems about dreams, including Martin Luther King by Myra Cohn Livingston, and Dreams by Langston Hughes.  After reading the poems orally several times with a partner, students will each create their own mobiles.  Student should cut out 4 clouds out of white construction paper; 2 large, and 2 small. (teacher may create a template to make the projects easier and more uniform)  On first large cloud, student should complete this sentence:  Goals and Dreams for this year.  On 1 small cloud, complete this sentence: Dreams for my community.  On the second small cloud, student should complete the sentence:  Dreams for me as an adult.  On second large cloud, complete the sentence:  Dreams to make the world a better place.  Assemble the clouds with first large cloud hanging first from a wire shirt hanger, then hang 2 small clouds side by side from large cloud.  Attach second large cloud to the bottom of the small clouds.  Students should present their mobiles to the class, describing their ideas of what a dream means to them.

Implementation - I have not done this lesson yet, as I am waiting for Martin Luther King's birthday.  I imagine that the students will love it because they always love expressing their creativity!  We cannot display mobile from the ceiling due to fire codes, so I plan to display them hanging from the white board.

Lessons for Poetry and Intermediate students

1. Choral Poem with Questions (Kasey Summers)

Objective - Students will read the poem Chocolate Chip Cookies together as a class and then answer questions to check comprehension.

Summary - Before reading the poem I give each student a chocolate chip cookie to get them in the mood. Next, I provide a copy of the poem to each student. We read over the poem together. Then the students are to read the poem a second time to themselves. Last, I pass out questions that pertain to the poem to check comprehension. The last three questions ask the students to identify their favorite cookie, why they like that cookie, and how many chocolate chips are on a cookie. They are to guess and then I pass out a second cookie for each student to count the chips and then enjoy.

Implementation - My students really enjoyed this activity. They wanted to do it again just so they could enjoy another cookie. The cookies really motivated the students. Almost all of the students got the questions correct. I try to do a fun activity on Fridays and this just fit right in. If you would like this poem and the questions email me and I will send a copy to you.

2. Poetry Comprehension Center (Amy Spilker)

Objective - Students will analyze a poem of their choice by completing a poetry comprehension worksheet.

Summary - Students were given a free read period of 10 minutes and asked to select their two favorite poems. Then we read one of the selected poems together and went through the analysis questions. We talked about groups of rhyming words. Then we talked about the author's purpose in writing the poem. We looked at what could happen next if the poem were to have a sequel. We looked at the title selection to see how it related to the poem. Then we drew a picture about the poem. Next I had each student complete a summary sheet about one of the poems they selected. The final phase was to read the poem to a neighbor and share the findings of their poetry study.

Implementation - The students had a great time and took their task seriously. This activity has really lent itself to an author study type setting. It was great to see them taking poetry to a whole new level. This also works well with the Open Court poems that randomly pop up in our texts.
