Lesson Title - Expanding Our Vocabulary
Contributor - Christina Blankenship
Grade Level - Kindergarten
Essential Reading Element - Vocabulary
Objectives - To get the student to understand and apply new vocabulary introduced in a picture book from a read aloud.
Procedure - The students will be engaged in a read aloud that introduces new vocabulary. After the story has been read we will discuss the new vocabulary that has been presented. After this discussion the students will add the new vocabulary to their vocabulary book, which when it is started at the beginning of the year, will consist of the word being written and a picture drawn beside it showing what the word means. They will be making their very own personal picture dictionary.
Implementation - My students absolutely loved this activity. It showed that they actually understood the word being taught. We will be adding these vocabulary pages to the back of their poetry notebooks so that they will have them to keep at the end of the school year. This starts slowly in Kindergarten but once they catch on they love it and can't get enough of showing what they know.
