Essential Reading Element - Comprehension
Objective(s) – Students will use facts to retell and review a story.
Procedure – After reading a story students can choose a way to retell the story.
1.) Facts jar - Write facts from the story, on strips of paper. Illustrations can be added to the strips. Place the strips into the jar. Students draw facts from the jar. Read the facts and after all the facts from the jar are read put the facts in sequential order.
2.) Accordion book - Use a 8 ½ x 11 paper. Fold it in ½ lengthwise. Cut in ½ on the fold. Now tape the 2 sheets together at the edge. Fold 5 times to create 8 sections. Illustrate the cover page and draw events from the story on the other sections in sequential order. Retell the story.
3.) Retelling mobile – Take a clothes hanger and cover the triangle section with paper. Write the title of the story on the paper triangle. Write and illustrate facts from the story on cut out paper shapes to tie in sequential order onto the hanger to complete the retelling mobile.
Implementation - Students made accordion books to retell their story. Some students understood what to do. Some had to have help putting events in sequential order. Students enjoyed sharing their facts and illustrations.
