Lesson Title – Fall Poetry
Contributor – Melissa Ingram
Grade Level – 1- 4
Essential Reading Element – phonemic awareness
Objective(s) – Students will create an acrostic poem and illustrate it with leaf rubbings.
Procedure – Students will discuss fall and fall activities. Students will think of words that describe fall that start with each letter (F, A, L and L). After students have filled in each letter of the poem, demonstrate how to do a leaf rubbing and pass out leaves so that students can decorate their poems with leaf rubbings.
Implementation - This was too much for my first graders, so I read them a fall poem and we pointed out certain fall words and the letter they start with. We also talked about why leaves fall and I showed them some examples of leaves from the school grounds. Then they created leaf rubbings. They enjoyed the hands-on activities.
My older students (2nd -4th ) enjoyed creating their own acrostic poems and illustrating them. After students shared their work with the class, I displayed their work on a bulletin board for our upcoming Family Reading Night (“Fall Into Reading”) J
