Title - Highlighting Words (Erin B.)
Objective - Students will hightlight words of interest in poem.
Summary - The lesson could be whole group, small group or in a center. We will use a
poem of interest (within a theme or unit of study) that we have read several times, so
the students are familiar with all of the words. The poem will be written on large chart
paper. We will use highlighting tape to highlight words of interest. These could be words
that we've studied in our Open Court curriculum (a_e spelling, oo spelling, etc) or sight
words, word family words, rhyming words or vocabulary words. Students will be asked to
find the a_e spelling word and hightlight it with the tape. We will leave the hightlighted
words up so students may come up and use a pointer to practice during independent work time.
Implementation - Students seem to recall the sight words more readily when we use the highlight activity. They especially like the part when they get to come up and point out the words.
