Lesson Title -  Home and Back With Books

Contributor -  Kimberly McKiernan

Grade Level -  kindergarten

Essential Reading Element - Picture Books/Parental Involvement

Objective(s) -  to get students more motivated to read and to get parents involved with their child's learning process.

Procedure -  Each child and paretn will read a literature selection and complete related activities using hands-on manipulatives and journal recording pages.

Implementation -  Using the book Home and Back with Books I will select several different activities to start with.  Each activity will have a bag that has all of the supplies and books needed to make this activity work.  See sample bags below.  I will start with one or two bags and increase as the year goes on.  Students' names will be drawn out of a cup and that is who will take the bag home for the night (maybe a couple of nights).  All directions, books and supplies will be in the bag.  I will make up bags that go along with the themes we study throughout the year.

Examples, Resources, and Links -

One such bag will be called the Birthday Bag.  Inside parents will find three or more books about birthdays.  A family letter giving instructions on what to do.  A journal will be included in the bag.  There will be a small gift and birthday card for the birthday student.

Another bag would be the Farm Bag.  Inside parents will find three or more books about the Farm.  A family letter, a journal, plastic farm animails, small, wooden building blocks, pencils and crayons.

My main resource is Home and Back with Books from Creative Teaching Press.
