Lesson Title - Illustration Station in a First Grade Classroom Literacy Center

Essential Reading Element - Comprehension
Objective(s) - Students will visualize a poem, demonstrating comprehension through artwork.
Procedure - During whole group, teacher will present a poem with a strong image - "The Cow" by Robert Louis Stevenson - and assist in generating ideas of a picture that would match the words and imagery of the poem. Teacher will demonstrate painting a picture that matches some of the ideas the class came up with.
During centers, students will read a poem selected by the teacher - "An Autumn Greeting" -Anonymous - Students will paint a picture that matches the image in their mind in relation to the poem. Students will record the words that come to mind when they look at their picture. Students will write those words on a post it and stick it to the back of the picture.
Implementation - Will be used during Literacy Center. Students will work independently and then share work with eachother at the conclusion of the activity.
