Lesson Title – Literature circles

Contributor – Debbie Grant

Grade Level – K - 2

Essential Reading Element - Comprehension

Objective(s) – To read, discuss, write about, and respond to a book in a way meaningful to the child.

Procedure – Review with students what the rules are for listening and having a discussion group. At the end of a unit in a basal anthology, list all of the stories read in the unit. Students then will vote on their favorite story. Divide up into groups by story titles. Discuss and review the story. Then students write in their journals about what the story was about and why they chose it as their favorite. The next day students will go back to their groups and choose an extension project to do about the story. Examples are – accordion books, character bookmarks, story hats, collage, etc. On the 3rd day students will share their extension projects and journal writing with the class

Implementation -We made a list all the stories from the - unit -Finding Friends. We voted and decided that our favorite story was Big Al. Then we divided up into groups by story titles. Students discussed the story and reviewed the story and characters.

Then each student illustrated the story and wrote 1 sentence about the story. The next day students made character bookmarks and shared them with the class.
