This article is a very thorough look at what researchers have discovered about how to successfully teach children to read. Each of the five essential elements of reading is defined, looks at scientifically-based research in relation to each area, applies the research to the classroom, describes practical strategies for teaching these skills, and answers frequently asked questions. The sections focusing on phonemic awareness, fluency, and vocabulary were expecially good, with practical suggestions for implementation in the classroom. It is well-written, with practical yet important implications for the classroom. A must read for teachers!
