Classroom Libraries and the Five Elements of Reading

How can classroom libraries enhance Phonological Awareness instruction while focusing on PHONEMIC AWARENESS?

Phonemic Awareness (a subcategory of phonological awareness) instruction teaches students to hear, identify, and work with (manipulate) individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken language.  This is "ear training" only.

"Phonological Awareness includes identifying and manipulating larger parts of spoken language, such as words, syllables, and onsets and rimes--as well as phonemenes.  It also encompasses awareness of other aspects of sound, such as rhyming, alliteration, and intonation."

Activities for Classroom Libraries and Primary students.

1. RHYME TYME - Rhyme CD's/Tapes Basket for Phonemic Awareness (Shannon A.)

Objective - Students will have independent practice listening to rhyming text while in the book center or classroom library.

Summary - Keep a basket of rhyme CD's/tapes/books in your classroom library. Some of the suggested CD's/tapes/books might be Down by the Bay by Raffi or any of the great Jack Perlusky poetry CD's/tapes/books. Have students listen to or read a rhyme CD/tape/book during center time.

Implementation - A listening center was created which included a tape recorder/CD player, headphones, and rhyme CD's/tapes/books.

2. Phonemic Awareness (K. Michele Boston)

Objective - Students will ...pick a poem out of the poetry center, read it & pick out words that begin the same & rhyme.

Summary - Students will go to the poetry tub and pick from many poems. They will practice reading it and then pick out words that begin the same and words that rhyme.

Implementation - Students enjoyed this lesson. They have really enjoyed reading a lot of poetry.

3. Word Smacker (Shelley Brimacombe)

Objective - Students will select picture cards to feed the word smacker based on the given letter sound being studied...

Summary - The students will take turns choosing a picture card, say the word represented by the picture and decide if the Word Smacker (tiny trash monster made with googly eyes)can eat the word based on its sound. Words not beginning with the given sound are placed in a basket.

Implementation - The children enjoy feeding the trash monster called the Word Smacker. The first cards I made were too big and the children were bending them to get them in the smacker's mouth. Smaller picture cards work best.

4.  Word Dectective (Kim Meadows)

Objective - Students will be given letters from a word to use to make other words and try to figure out the "mystery" word.

Summary -  The students are given a page with a scrambled word, for example "campfire".  They then manipulate the letters to try and make as many words as possible.  The ultimate goal is to determine the "mystery" word.

Implementation - The kids love doing this.  It's hands on and they enjoy trying to figure out the "mystery" word.  I even put little plastic magnifying glasses with the pages so the can be true dectectives.
