Classroom Libraries
Classroom Libraries and the Five Elements of Reading
How can classroom libraries enhance Phonics instruction?
Lessons for Primary students
1. Phonics Books for Your Classroom Library (Shannon)
Objectives - Students will identify the difference between vowels and consonants. Students will learn to change one letter within a word to make new words.
Summary - Two great books to add to your classroom library to teach and review phonics skills are Word Wizard by Cathryn Falwell and The War Between the Consonants and the Vowels by Priscilla Turner and Whitney Turner.
Implementation - I used these books and others in my classroom library to have students identify phonics rules. They used the books to make a poster with the rule, a picture and examples. Then students shared the rules and we displayed them in the Working With Words Center.
2. Sounds in Action: Phonological Awareness Activities & Assessment (Joyce Hommes-Belena)
Objective - Students will sing songs/play games to illustrate phoneme manipulation.
Summary - Students in first grade who are still having problems with word patterns and identifying and creating word patterns really enjoy the activities in this book. One sample activity targeting addition of initial sounds uses the tune of "Old MacDonald" to teach this skill. (eg. Old MacDonald had a sound, And the sound was /at/. He put a /b/ in front of it, And now the word is "bat."
Implementation - I use activities in this book at the beginning of the year as a supplement to phonics instruction to reinforce skills that students may not have mastered. I allow them to go to the board and write the words which we guess, and that works to reinforce spelling, too. They love the activities and sometimes it's difficult to get them to move on to other lesson components, but it's worth it in motivation and skill building!
