Poetry and Reading

How does using poetry in your classroom build Phonics skills?

Lessons for Poetry and Primary students

1. "The Big Bad Wolf" (K. Michele Boston)

Objective - Students will pick out rhyming words from the poem.

Summary - The students will read the poem twice with a partner. Then, they will write down the words that rhyme.

Implementation - The students really enjoyed the lesson. They liked reading the poem and laughing and working together.

2. Highlighting Words (Erin B.)

Objective - Students will hightlight words of interest in poem.

Summary - The lesson could be whole group, small group or in a center. We will use a poem of interest (within a theme or unit of study) that we have read several times, so the students are familiar with all of the words. The poem will be written on large chart paper. We will use highlighting tape to highlight words of interest. These could be words that we've studied in our Open Court curriculum (a_e spelling, oo spelling, etc) or sight words, word family words, rhyming words or vocabulary words. Students will be asked to find the a_e spelling word and hightlight it with the tape. We will leave the hightlighted words up so students may come up and use a pointer to practice during independent work time.

Implementation - This is what happened when you implemented the lesson.

3. Alliteration Action  (Sarah S.)

Objective - Students will engage in developing and writing alliterative sentences.

Summary - Read the book A My Name is Alice by Jane Bayer. Use a large map for students to identify states, countries, etc. that begin with the same letter names as the names in the book. The teacher writes an example alliterative sentence using his/her name. Encourages students to share examples of alliteration. Partners work together to develop and write alliterative sentences.

Implementation - Big Buddy partners worked with younger partners  to develop alliterative sentences using each of their names. They were compiled into a class Big Book.

Lessons for Intermediate students

1. Your Title Here :Fall Poetry (Melissa I.)

Objective - Students will create an acrostic poem and illustrate with leaf rubbings.

Summary Students will discuss fall and fall activities.  Students will think of words that describe fall that start with each letter (F, A, L and L).  After students have filled in each letter of the poem, demonstrate how to do a leaf rubbing and pass out leaves so that students can decorate their poems with leaf rubbings.

Implementation - This was too much for my first graders, so we read  a fall poem and pointed out certain fall words and the letter they start with. We also talked about why leaves fall and I showed them some examples of leaves from the school grounds.  They then created leaf rubbings. They enjoyed the hands-on activities.

My older students (2nd-4th) enjoyed creating their own acrostic poems and illustrating them.  I displayed their work on a bulletin board in the media center for our upcoming Family Reading Night (the theme is "Fall Into Reading")
