Lesson Title - Pirate Poetry
Contributor - Shannon Ayrish
Essential Reading Element - Phonological Awareness
Objective(s) - Students will understand how to create a poem using alliteration when describing pirates.
Procedure - Explain to students that alliteration is used to repeat beginning sounds. Tongue twisters such as "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers" is an example of alliteration. Once you have explained that alliteration is repeating beginning sounds, then discuss how to use describing words. In this case we will focus on describing pirates. Use the Pirate Poem Template to have students create their own allitertive pirate poetry (the template is attached in the files section of this site and the link is below).
Implementation - My students created funny and descriptive poems. This lesson was incorporated with a pirate party, pirate read-a-thon, and pirate craft ideas. See the sample below.
Examples, Resources, and Links -
Pirates, pirates, pirates,
hairy, howling, hilarious pirates,
dirty, dancing, diabolical pirates,
Pirates, pirates, pirates
