Lesson Title – Reading Around the World!
Contributor – Melissa Ingram
Grade Level – K-5
Essential Reading Element - comprehension
Objective(s) – Students will identify story settings and explore multicultural literature.
Procedure - Hang a world map on the wall. Throughout the year, talk about where each book you read is set. Add a pin to the map to mark each setting. After several pins have been added, trace your route using a piece of yarn to connect the pins.
Implementation - I am excited to try this. The theme for our reading program, as well as the media center, is “Reading Takes You Places”. This is one activity that will work for all ages. You can use this plan along with a study of folklore, celebrations or fairy tales from various countries.
Students had a great time marking the "places we visited" through reading with a post-it on the large wall map. (Pins did not work on my cinder block wall.)
