Title - Syllable Bugs (Nancy R.)
Objective - Parents will work with child on recognizing syllables
Summary - What each child will need: egg carton, construction paper, glue and scissors. The parent can ask the child to think of an insect, perhaps a butterfly or a caterpillar. Help the child determine how many syllables are in the word. Cut a section of the egg carton according to the number of syllables, one cup per syllable. Then have the child wrtie the syllable on each cup, one cup per syllable. Using the construction paper make antennaes, wings, legs or other features that your child would like to add to make the insect look complete. For continued syllabic fun, choose from these other insects: beetle, bumblebee, hornet, centipede and grasshopper. have the child bring his or her syllable bug back to school to share with his or her classmates.
Implementation - Students made the bugs with their parents and brought them in to share with the class during our unit on bugs. We displayed them in the classroom.
