Lesson Title – Haiku with Dogku
Contributor –Anne Draper
Grade Level – 3rd & 4th grade
Essential Reading Element – Phonics and Poetry
Objective(s) – Students will become familiar with haiku poetry then have them write their own haikus.
Procedure – Have students listen to Dogku including the author’s note that gives Andrew Clements definition of haiku. Discuss what haiku is giving other examples of this poetry form. When the children are comfortable with this type of poetry have them write their own versions.
Implementation - This will be implemented after the basic poetry unit has been introduced. This book helped the students understand what haiku poetry is and was a good starting place to inspire their own writings. The lesson went well.
