Poetry and Parental Involvement

1. Tracks In the Dirt (K. Michele Boston)

Objective - Students will ...read at least 82 correct words per minute from the story.

Summary - The students will take home the short story and let their parents time them on how many correct words they can read in one minute. They will read the story a few more times and then get their parents to time them again and see if they beat their first time.

Implementation - Parents have told me their children do better and better each week when I send these home. I send one home per week for them to practice.

2. Backpacks For Home

Objective -For parents and students to use the backpacks with various themes to learn more about a variety of topics.

Summary I collected backpacks over the years and now have put different themes into each backpack (I have about 20 of them). Some of the topics are Whales, Kennedy Space Center and Dr. Seuss. The children take the backpacks home for a few days and read about the topic with a parent. The student comes back and shares what they have learned and many write about the topic.

Implentation The children and their families love this idea. The only drawback is some families don't take care of the articles in the backpacks such as souvenirs that I have collected for the backpacks. (Carolyn Conner)

3. Pumpkin Life Cycle (Christy Dameron)

Objective Students will work with their parents to color, sequence and write a sentence about the pumpkin life cycle.

Summary After our study of pumpkins I sent home a pictures of the pumpkin life cycle for the families to work on together. This was a review and the students were teaching their parents about the life cycle and reinforcing the science vocabulary.

Implementation the parents loved this activity. The children enjoyed being the teacher.

4. Your Title Here (Add your name)

Objective - Students will ...

Summary - Write a description of the lesson here.

Implementation - This is what happened when you implemented the lesson.

Lessons for Intermediate students

1. Schoolnotes.com (Lacy Peterson & Angie McLeod)

Objective - Students will learn to be responsible for studying vocabulary words at home. They will practice the definitions of weekly vocabulary words with parents and practice using the words in sentences to understand them better.

Summary - We send home homework packets on Mondays that include the spelling and vocabulary words for the week. We also post them on www.schoolnotes.com (a free website for teachers to use) and students can practice the vocabulary words from home on electronic flashcards through the website. Parents also have access to printing off newsletters and the weekly words, in case the homework packet gets left at school or lost. They can help keep their child accountable for homework when the student comes home and says "I don't have any homework."

Implementation - The parents love this website and they constantly are viewing it and emailing us through it with questions. It is a great way for us as teachers to communicate with parents, and it gives them a way to help out at home. We would recommend you try this website out. To see our websites go to: http://www.schoolnotes.com/32303/petersonl1.html

We have already had 300-400 visits to both websites!
