Parental Involvement

How does parental involvement in your classroom build Comprehension skills?

Activities for Parental Involvement and Primary students

1. __Help My Child to Read Better__(Darrell D.)

Objective - Parent will read aloud to their child to help increase comprehension.

Summary - Parent will read aloud from their favorite reading materials (book, newspaper, etc.)

Implementation - The child's interest level and love for reading will start to increase more.

Activities for Parental Involvement and Intermediate students

1. Poetry and Parents (Kasey)

Objective - Students will work with their parent/guardian to read a poem "Take Me Out of the Classroom" and then answer comprehension questions.

Summary - I passed out the Parent/Student Homework to the students. I then explained the directions and made sure they understood that they must do this with their parent and have their signature and their own signature on the paper in order to turn in and get credit. The directions state that the students must read the poem "Take Me Out of the Classroom" together with their parent twice through. Next, together they are to answer the questions from the poem by looking back in the poem. Last the student and the parent are to sign on the signature lines stating that they have both taken part in the homework assignment and have read the poem and done the questions together.

Implementation - I found that the students loved to do this activity with their parent(s). A lot more of my students actually did their homework that night. On of my parents said it was really fun. I think with the kind of kids at my school it is very important to try and get the parents involved, because generally they really are not involved. I really like this activity and am going to make more of them.

2. Pumpkin Life Cycle (Christy Dameron)

Objective Students will work with their parents to color, sequence and write a sentence about the pumpkin life cycle.

Summary After our study of pumpkins I sent home a pictures of the pumpkin life cycle for the families to work on together. This was a review and the students were teaching their parents about the life cycle and reinforcing the science vocabulary.

Implementation the parents loved this activity. The children enjoyed being the teacher.

3. Polar Express Visits (Carolyn Conner)

Objectives For students, parents and myself to get to know each other.

Summary During the month of December I visit each of my students at their home. This is their Christmas present from me. When I visit with the family I read the book "Polar Express" aloud to the family. When I am done reading we discuss favorite parts of the story and often parents will tell a story about something magical that happened at Christmas when they were a child. After reading the story and discussing it, we play the Polar Express game.

Implementation I really enjoy visiting the child at their home. The children usually show me their bedroom and I get to meet other siblings (who join us for the reading of the book and the game). Sometimes parents serve hot chocolate while we read and play the game. It is usually a positive experience for everyone, but I have had a few parents go in another room and watch t.v. and leave me and the child by ourselves.

2. Dialogue Journals (Scott Mazur)

Objective - Students will increase their comprehension and identify key literary devices by communicating with their parents through a dialogue journal.

Summary - Using a "Book in a Bag" send home kit students will read the same book as their parents.  In the back place two copies of theselected book, a dialogue journal (spiral divided into two halfs), and chapter by chapter focus questions for studens and parents.  Students and parents will rad the same book.  Students will respond in the dialogue journal and share with their parents sequencing, comprehension, summary, etc. Their parents will then response to the information they share.

Implementation - My students were very excited about reading the same book as their parents.  Even reluctant reading parents said that they enjoyed talking to their children through the journal.  The only set back at this point is developing question guides for the books.  The kids are reading them too quickly.
