Author Study
1. __Wiggle Works Writing __(Sarah S.)
Objective - Students will use the computer program Wiggle Works to practice early writing strategies (Wiggle Works has matching paper back books).
Summary - Students listen to a Wiggle Works story on the computer (or read the paper back books). Use the drawing and writing program to draw and write about the story.
Implementation - Students used the Wiggle Works program to illustrate and write about a story. After the teacher observed each student's work the student printed it. Completed work was posted in the classroom under a sign stating "Clever Computer Kids."
2. Author StudiesObjective - Students will become familiar with the picture books written by various authors.Summary - My kids are exposed to many excellent picture books through our weekly (or two week) Author Study (Don and Audrey Wood, Eric Carle, Mark Teague are good starters!). Each day, I read a book by the author we are spotlighting and include one or two bits of information about the author. We go to the author's website and read more about that author. Many times their is an activity or game that we can do as we visit the website. Implementation - The kids become "experts" at identifying books by the author we are studying, especially if the author is also the illustrator. When we visit the author online, the kids love to see pictures of the author. Of particular delight is if there is a photo taken when the author was a first or second grader! As we continue to look at the website, they are always excited to see pictures of characters from the books we have read and I hear many "We read that!"s and "Look, there's _____!" The kids love to take these books back to their seats to reread them when they have free time.Book Cover CreatorObjective - Students will create book covers of a favorite scene from the book Flat Stanley using the website www.readwritethink.org/materials/bookcover/ Summary - As part of a week study of Flat Stanley, working on letter writing, geography, and becoming involved in the Flat Stanley Project, students used laptops to create book covers.Implementation - There was a lot of excitement in this lesson. Students discussed favorite parts of the story and illustrated them. It was a good thing that we had FSU students to help in the classroom to help with any computer issues because that could have been very frustrating for some children..Comic CreatorObjective - Students will create comics sequencing the events in the story Maggie, The Beagle With The Broken Tail. Students will use the website www.readwritethink.org/materials/comic/index.html< to create the comic./font> Summary - Students read the book Maggie, The Beagle With the Broken Tail by Evelyn Gilmer (a teacher at our school) in class with the teacher. Using the laptops, the students were able to sequence the story using the website. Each student was able to print out the comic to take home after displaying the work on the bulletin board. Implementation - This was a good way to determine who could retell the story and sequence it correctly. Students were very proud of the products that they created. Make Way for DucklingsObjective - Students will create a Keynote Presentation to practice vocabulary words from the story Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey. They will write sentences to use context clues to help understand and recall the meaning of the words. Students will insert pictures to help conceptualize the word and make it easier to remember.Summary - Students created the Keynote Presentations. This activity took a large part of a day. Students worked in partners on the computers. Products were well done. Implementation - The students got into good discussions with partners when deciding what pictures to use and what sentences to write. Time was a big factor in this lesson. It took longer than expected. It was a good learning experience not only for the vocabulary but for the use of the Keynote Program.
