Lessons for Primary students
1. How I Became a Pirate (Roberta and Roberta)
Objective - Students will read the story How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long
Summary -The teacher will read the story How I Became a Pirate to the students. This is part of a long study of the GEMS Science Unit Treasure Boxes, Geography, Mapping and Graphing Skills. The culmunation is Pirate Day where all students come dressed to school as pirates. The parents will be involved by helping students come up with costumes. Reading and writing map directions is part of the unit. Parents go to the teacher's website and read about pirates on the linked pages. Students are able to check out the teacher's copy of How I Became a Pirate and read it aloud to the parents at home. This takes several weeks but the unit is long and there is plenty of time for each child to have a turn.
Implementation - This is always a favorite part of third grade for our students.They love the story .There is an excitement about Pirate Day. There is a connection between the curriculum which includes Reading, Writing, Technology, Math , Science, and Geography. Parents' feedback is very positive.
