Picture Books
How does using picture books in your classroom build Phonics skills?
Lessons for Primary students
1. Sound Hunt (C. Laney)
Objective - Students will identify words from the text of a picture book that contain a particular sound.
Summary - Using a picture book and a mini compostion book, the kids are asked to go on a word hunt. The hunt focuses on the sound spelling we are reviewing that day. The kids each record the sound they are hunting for at the top of the page (for instance 'p') and then search the book for words that begin with that sound. When found, the word is written in the mini composition book. The goal is to find at least five words that begin with that sound.
Implementation - This is a good literacy station activity. I select the books ahead of time so that I'm sure they contain words with the sounds they will search for. The mini composition books are popular with the kids so they all look forward to this activity.
