Lessons for Primary students

1. Illustration Station- The Underwater Wibbles

Objective - Students will illustrate a charater from a poem.

Summary - Student will read The Underwater Wibbles from: The New Kid on the Block by Jack Prelutsky. Student will then use a variety of art media to design and illustrate their own "wibble", according to the descriptions in the poem.

Implementation - This activity really seems to help the students disect the poem a little further than just reading it.  They really paid attention to the details when they were reading it to get ideas to illustrate.

    • (Michelle Bender, Joyce Hommes-Belena, Kim Greenfield)
    • (Joyce Hommes-Belena - I read this poem with my first graders, and since it was somewhat of a "stretch" for some of my readers, we engaged in a lot of discussion about the words and what they meant.  Some of the verbs were particularly  challenging because they were unfamiliar, but we acted out what we thought the words meant, then we went to the dictionary to find out the correct definitions.  We brainstormed what "wibbles" might be, and then drew pictures of our perceptions of the "wibbles.  The students enjoyed the poem and then we...see below!!)

2. Observation Station- The Underwater Wibbles

    • (Michelle Bender, Joyce Hommes-Belena, Kim Greenfield)

Objective - Students will read a poem. Student will observe and manipulate cheese. Student will use adjectives (descriptive words).

Summary - Students will read The Underwater Wibbles from: The New Kid on the Block by Jack Prelutsky. Student will then observe and manipulate cheeses found in the story using their 5 senses. Student will list adjectives to describe each cheese provided. Teacher may provide a worksheet/ template for this.

Implementation - In this lesson, it was very interesting to see the expressions on the kids faces when they tried the cheeses.  The adjectives they used to describe the cheese were priceless!  What a great lesson!

(Joyce Hommes-Belena - ...we actually sat and sampled some cheeses!  Trust me...this is a fun but expensive lesson!  I brought in Baby Brie, gouda, Camembert, and provolone and diced it.  I served one type at a time to small groups of students so they would appreciate these poem characters and their voracious, expensive taste!  We tasted all four, and then we constructed a tally chart to vote on our favorites.  Provolone won.  And then they wanted to know why we didn't have cheddar!  The children loved the tasting and the poem was definitely more meaningful by doing the tasting.  These grade one students really got into this lesson, and only one child refused to participate in developing her aristocratic palate!

3. Listening/Arts Station - Trees (Joyce Hommes-Belena  - Grade One)

Objective - Students will listen to a poem, read it, write a list poem, decorate a tree. (Grade One level) This activity is intended to be completed over a period of a week when children access the Listening/Arts Work Station. Writing a list poem instruction preceedes lesson.

Summary - Teacher will read a charted copy of the poem Trees as part of a science lesson on changing of the seasons. Students will read with teacher.  Seasonal changes will be discussed. Students will use a listening center to listen to and read the poem Trees (copies will be provided in plastic jackets.) Students will refer to copies of list poems in the work station to create a list poem about a season and its changes. Follow up activity will be to have pictures with tree trunks available in the center with glue and tissue paper so students can return to desks to work on creating a picture to accompany poem.

Implementation - Students worked diligently in making their trees, but the project took longer than anticipated.  In all, it took about five days of center time and taking turns to listen to the poem and finally to construct the projects.  My first graders seemed to enjoy manipulating the tape player.  The list poem was a fun activity.  We grouped to discuss the characteristics of trees in spring, summer, fall, and winter.  Writing the list poems was a natural extension of those discussions because ideas and words were generated and shared within the groups.  Overall, a fun time and good activities.

4. Listening/Arts Station - Fold Me a Poem (Joyce Hommes-Belena)

Objective - Students will read the story Fold Me a Poem by Kristine O'Connell George with the teacher. Vocabulary and the meaning of the poems will be discussed. Students will go to the center and fold one of the origami animals by reading and following directions.

Summary - The teacher read the story and discussed the vocabulary and meaning of the story. Students were then given directions on how to fold two different origami animals. When it was their time to go to the center, the students were able to fold one of the animals.

Implementation - This is a very colorful and reader friendly book. The students were drawn to it and were very eager to listen to the story. They were very anxious to fold the origami as well. Following directions for some was a challenge and some students helped those peers having difficulty.
