Poetry and Parental Involvement

1. Poetry and Parents (Kasey)

Objective - Students will work with their parent/guardian to read a poem "Take Me Out of the Classroom" and then answer comprehension questions.

Summary - I passed out the Parent/Student Homework to the students. I then explained the directions and made sure they understood that they must do this with their parent and have their signature and their own signature on the paper in order to turn in and get credit. The directions state that the students must read the poem "Take Me Out of the Classroom" together with their parent twice through. Next, together they are to answer the questions from the poem by looking back in the poem. Last the student and the parent are to sign on the signature lines stating that they have both taken part in the homework assignment and have read the poem and done the questions together.

Implementation - I found that the students loved to do this activity with their parent(s). A lot more of my students actually did their homework that night. One of my parents said it was really fun. I think with the kind of kids at my school it is very important to try and get the parents involved, because generally they really are not involved. I really like this activity and am going to make more of them.

2. Family Rhyme Time (Kim Meadows)

Objective - Students and their parents will do different activities together based on different nursery rhymes.

Summary - The teacher will set up stations with activities that the child can do with their parent.  For example, using nursey rhymes, there might be a Little Bo Peep station where children will count Little Bo Peep's lost sheep.  Each activity should have some element of the nursery rhyme and then also a little something to take home.

Implementation - The kids love this and so did the parents.  There was food and treats so everyone was happy.
